Winners Crowned at Walt DeGeest Memorial Shoot

Shooters at the Rapid City Trap Club posted some good scores at the Walt DeGeest Memorial Trap Shoot held August 26 & 27, despite the two days of rainy weather over the weekend. The shooters endured drizzle and cool temperatures on Saturday and heavier, steady rains on Sunday.

The shoot was a memorial to several shooters from the Rapid City Trap Club that enjoyed, excelled in, and promoted the sport of trapshooting. The events honored Walt DeGeest in the Singles competition, Bob & Rita Gallant in Doubles and Doyle Ream in the Handicap event. A special High Over All trophy in memory of Gordon Russet was presented for the high score in the three combined events.

A moment of silence was observed for all of the shooters from the Rapid City Trap Club that have passed on, including our good friend, Kirk Peil of Martin, who passed away on his return trip from the SD State Shoot in July.

Matt Bartholow, a Junior shooter from Rapid City was the Russet High Over All trophy winner with a score of 587 x 600. He was the 16 yard Class AA winner with his score of 198 x 200 (after a shootoff with Greg Johnson and Jim Anderson), the  27 yard champ in Handicap after posting a 192 x 200, and crowned the Gallant Doubles Champion after breaking 197 of 200 twin birds thrown.

Rick Hemminger of Alliance Nebraska was the 16 yard DeGeest Singles Champion with his perfect score of 200 x 200, after a shootoff with Bill Powers of Rapid City who also broke 200 targets. Powers won the Class A trophy for his fine shooting.

Wes Kintigh, a Junior shooter from Rapid City was awarded the trophy for the Ream Handicap Champion with a high score of 194 x 200 dead birds. Kintigh was also awarded two full yards to send him to the 23 ½ yard line for his high scores in the two handicap sub events.
