BARTHOLOW, OLSON, BURGEE WIN BLACK HILLS GOLD SHOOT

 The Annual Landstrom’s Black Hills Gold Trapshoot was held at the Rapid City Trap Club on September 16 and September 17. Landstrom’s Black Hills Gold belt buckles were the trophies for all of the class and category champions in the events.

Matt Bartholow of Rapid City, SD was the High Over All Champion with his total combined score of 555 x 600. Bartholow was also the Doubles Champion after a high score of 189 x 200 twin birds shot and also took the 27 yard handicap crown with a 169 x 200 broken birds.

Saturday’s singles competition began with fifty shooters enjoying warm and sunny weather, but, by the afternoon doubles race, the wind and rain drove more than half of the shooters away from the game, with only 20 shooters remaining for the windy and soggy twin bird events.

Lonnie Olson of North Platte, NE shot a perfect 200 x 200 targets to win the Singles Champion buckle, after a shoot off with Marvin Cox of Mullen, NE, who also shot a perfect score. Cox then won the Veteran Singles Champion belt buckle for his efforts. Olson was named the 23-24 yard winner with a score of 159 x 200 handicap targets broken and was the Class B Doubles Champion with a score of 182 x 200 dead targets. This was Olson’s first 100 straight in singles competition, which he then backed up with another 100 straight for his first 200 straight of his shooting career.

The only other shoot off of the tournament was between Foster Bartholow of Rapid City and Jim Butler of Gillette, WY for the Class AA singles title. They both shot near perfect scores of 199 x 200, and Bartholow was victorious for the Class AA trophy after shooting an additional 50 birds.

The participation and scores stayed low for Sunday’s handicap event with 23 shooters bravely remaining in the extremely windy, cold, and rainy competition.

Doug Burgee, a 22 yard shooter from Dupree, SD, was crowned the Eric Peil Handicap Champion with a high score of 179 x 200 dead birds, which was an admirable posting considering the nasty weather conditions. Burgee also recorded his first 100 straight in the first 100 targets of Saturday’s singles competition.

This was the last ATA registered shoot for the calendar year at the Rapid City Trap Club. The club would like to thank all of the shooters and families that have come to Rapid City this year.
